The eagerly awaited hockey World Cup got off to a blistering start with a couple of sensational results on Day One.

Although England trouncing Australia was an achievement in itself, it was the India-Pakistan match that has enlivened the championship. The Indian players, who were up in arms against Hockey India till the other day, found the winning touch with rare gusto.

Billed as the final before the final, the showdown between the traditional arch-rivals had all the ingredients of a potboiler. If anyone had any doubt about India's preparedness, they have been systematically and completely shattered.

The team, minus the captain, displayed remarkable perseverance while scripting a memorable 4-1 victory that is certain to bolster the morale of the players.

To the Indian fan, still celebrating Sachin Tendulkar's double ton in ODIs, there would be no regret even if India fails to win the World Cup on home soil. A win against Pakistan is almost like winning the title itself in the battle royale. More so because it comes in the wake of the IPL III imbroglio.

One hopes that the players would not get complacent and continue with the golden touch of yore while they take on the likes of Australia, Holland and Germany.

For now, it is Bravo India.
