The goldfish is no more

Princess September | 31 May 2008, 12:57am

We brought home a little gold fish. It belonged to a ten year old. She asked us to take care of it, explaining carefully how many meals it would have each day, when we needed to change the water and that the water should not be hot. Just one week and it would have gone back home safely.

It was swimming by itself, quite happily in it's home. I even blogged couple of days back, seeing the goldfish fly (in water). And yesterday when i returned from work, i saw it floating dead. It was a sad sight. The little one swam full of life, gulping down its feed happily. My sister thinks she gulped a piece of the gravel that was at the base of the tank.

We bought two new gold fish to give back to our friend. But i am sure she would cry knowing her gold fish is no more. Raising pets, is not so easy. Be it gold fish, birds, or pups. When they suffer or go, it's hard to see.

Agree on both counts. That pets are often treated like inanimate objects and that attachments are not great things. But well, I care for all my inanimate objects as well, strangely even talk to them.

Detached attachment maybe is what you are looking for. So long as we live, we feel bonds pull at us, yet we can remain unaffected to a large extent. Someone once told me, you should be like the water droplets on the lotus. To the discerning eye, at the same time it looks like the droplet is on the lotus, yet somehow separate from it.

Sad about your loss.. Sometimes I feel life of pets are compared to that of life of inanimate objects; shirts, shoes etc. I feel it it almost all the time!!!

Which is why it is never a good idea to keep pets.

Most people live out an entire lifetime without realizing that attachments are curses, not blessings. And to whoever says such a thing, they give profound sounding advice like he must have suffered a lot, he needs to see the brighter side of life, there is so much to enjoy in this world, he should not be scared of getting hurt etc.

I find that such a load of bull. Bah.
