Suggestions towards better lives of People

Population is power. India has worlds second largest population and still a developing country. I believe most of the energy went unexplored because of illitracy, conservative politicians, lack of exposure, dominance by few, etc, etc. I like to point out several suggestions to improve living standards of people through my blog. I hope to contribute a drop in the ocean in future. Visitors please feel free to comment your opinions that will be helpful.

Railway Booking and Reservation

sbprasadrao | 29 April, 2009 03:30

Today I saw big lines infront of Railway Station in the deccan news paper. I am surrised even in this centuary, inspiteof hyderabad being IT Hub in the world, long lines are feasible in front of govt entities. I wish our ministers can think about it. If they can fully automate this process, it can provide more jobs, encourage litracy, and contribute to our GDP. The existing railway reservation really sucks and complicated.

The bigger problem is not the queues - anybody can book over the Internet these days, and all MMTS stations too sell tickets now.

The bigger problems are the way prices have gone up indirectly, and the way the compartments have gotten cramped.

Lalu's ploy of selling about 60% of tickets in a train in tatkal (which means you pay Rs. 150 extra per head if you do not manage to book really early and get tickets in the general quota) is hurting many people whose travel requirements firm up only in the last week.

Plus, he's added an extra berth to the side, which really cramps the (sleeper class, at least) compartments.

And the food in the trains is as always, expensive and lousy. The TTEs are corrupt, so that if you are waitlisted, you will get berths even if they are vacant (since some passengers did not turn up), only if you pay a bribe.

I do not agree on high prices for tickets, food, etc. This just shows how much improvement is lacking that makes lives easy. Why there is a waiting list, other non guarantee ticket codes that charge money at first step. Why should there be a Tatkal at first place, instead of catering to demand. Railway internet reservation is the worst online system in the world. Coming to food, Well no one is stopping us from bringing our own food box, yes providing food contracts to 3rd party company that can maintain minimum standards preset by Govt can be one way. Alright why should Govt own Railway - why not private comapnies that can compete for providing better service own it ? well lets not open that can of worms
