Familiarity breeds contempt?

What goes wrong in a relationship and makes it go from hot to cold?

I know that the first step in a relationship is attraction, it can be physical, emotional or intellectual and leaves both feeling inspired and excitedly filled with anticipation. Then comes the romantic part, where it starts to become comfortable, then more secure.

During this stage, tiny silly presents are given for no special reason and loving cards are slipped back and forth with words like "thinking of you" or

Life is a bridge. Cross over it, but build no house on it.

A few years ago I was told to read a book,

At four in the morning,
as I release you from my mind
into the limbo of uncertainty and semi-existence,
