A Week at Movies...

lucipherous | 2 March 2005, 4:23am

Seen a couple of brilliant movies over the last one week... but one thing I most certainly did not forsee was that at the end of the week I would be more excited writting about BLACK than a Martin Scorsese movie...

BLACK

This is simply one of the better movies to have come out of the india in a very long time.... I would be compelled to say that after Pyaasa I have not seen a movie with soo many layers in it..

The story is a simple and yet a brilliant story of a teacher literally being the guiding light for this deaf and dumb girl and showing her the meaning of life and then she has been given the oppurtunity to serve her master in return... Tight characterisation is something that stood out and subtlety in bringing out the various aspects of nature most definetly appreciable...

I would hate to disect the movie for others but one particular scence I cant but appreciate.. there is a scence where for the 4th year in a row Michelle(Rani) fails to graduate becuase her typing speed is too slow.. she is soo pissed about it that she wants to give up studying and in anger starts to punch away in the braille typewriter the word BLACK furiously claiming BLACK to be the only thing in life for her.. but Mr. Sawhney(Big B) the teacher that he is notices that she is typing the fastest she has ever done and starts to time her and looks at the sheet emerging from the type writer impressed with the way she was typing... now for that second he sees the letters on the sheet to have been made of not just dots but dots in color like orange, red blue... showing that he as a teacher saw only color in the BLACK that michelle was typing away..
I was left speachless after that scence...

In the end I applaud the effort that has gone into making of this classic....

The Aviator

Coming from the stable of Scorsese it honestly left a lot to be desired..
Leonardo was pretty good but honestly he was not the Howard Hughes one would expect to see.. suited aptly for the initial parts showing the arrogance and untamed wildness as a young man...
The character did grow up and the effort put in by Leonardo did seem honest but sorry it fell flat on his face.. with his sqeaky voice and boyish looks he never looked like the Aviator.
The scence where goes out for dinner with Katherine Hepburn is pretty good and so is the last scence where he is at the public hearing.. Apart from that I began to wonder why the 11 nominations.. more nominations than he has won for any of his previous movies.. including ragging bull, good fellas, Taxi Driver... Cate Blanchett was very good though..
Disappointed.

Heard a good song called the gin soaked boy the other day at a freinds place... I still have the song playing in my head..

" I am the gin in the gin soaked boy...."

Not much work at work today(yep u can laugh at the irony of that statement). Looking forward to going back home and reading Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha... and maybe listen to some singles of Mark Knopfler...
