Equal Opportunity

allsmiles | 13 May, 2004 01:08

Last Sunday, the maid who works in my house came upto me and asked me if I could help her out. She is not your regular foul-mouthed, lazy kaam chor kinda maid, basically minds her own business and doesnt indulge any kinda small talk or neighbours' gossip. So I asked her what is it that she wanted. "Could you help my daughter fill up an application form?". "Sure", I said.

She came along with her daughter that evening. The girl was round about 15-16 and wanted to get a seat in some college nearby. She also got a xerox of SSC marksheet that quite looked like this in content.

First language :67 (Telugu)  Second language :40 Third language :42 Math :82 Science :78 Social Studies :60 odd i am not sure about this though

Ok agreed this doesnt look like a toppers scoresheet, but guess you would give her a lot of credit considering the fact that she belongs to a strata in society where fathers/husbands whether employed or otherwise know only to booze and beat. She must be lending a helping hand in all household chores in her house as well as others. Except for her mother she may not have a major source of encouragement. No tuitions. Under the scheme of things, the only thing to work in her favour would prolly be that she belongs to a caste which would allow her to secure admission under the reservation.

I used to subscribe to the notion "Reservation be damned, merit should be the only criteria". So many deserving people were being deprived of opportunities was what I thought. All Indians are equal irrespective of caste creed race or sex was what I argued. But how much of equality is actually there ? Do they have the same exposure as the middle-class? Are so many facilities available to them? Do they have as many choices?

Its not like I am taking up her case. There must be so many like her who want to make their life better, who want to fight all odds and how many of them actually make it? In all probability she would study till she failed in some year and then they would marry her off and she would be doing whatever her mother does ...*sigh* I really hope the lord up above has a different story for her and the likes.
