Narayaneeyam

bhattathiri | 6 May 2004, 7:51am

Srimad Narayaneeyam is a devotional hymn consisting of 1036 verses written in the
16th century by a scholar-devotee=poet by name Melpathur Narayana
Bhattatiri, as an epitome of Srimad Bhagavata Mahapuranam. The immediate
need for him to write this hymn, was his suffering from his ailment of
paralysis, for the alleviation of which, he prayed to the Lord of
Guruvayoor. He wrote one hundred chapters at the rate of one chapter
(dasakam--a bunch of 10 verses) per day, sitting in front of the deity.
As the story goes, the author, Melpathur Narayana Bhattatiri voluntarily transferred onto himself, the ailment of paralysis from his Guru and relative, Trikandiyur Achuta Pisharoti ritualistically, in order to save him. In the process, he himself became a paralytic. He then got himself carried to the shrine at Guruvayoor where he could take shelter at the feet of Lord Krishna and get divine intervention.

Nice to hear the myth behind a great piece of poetry. Its quite impressive that this hymn can cure arthritic paralysis.. I wonder is there is a hymn to cure cancer.. Don't suppose there is one for AIDS.. the disease was not around when such great men lived. Maybe in the future Bhattatiri will be born again and relieve the world of HIV.

The disease wasn't around then, Mr. Skeptic, but the cure was always around. The problem with skeptics is that they don't believe in anything that they haven't tried.

A sloka from Naraayaneeyam: "Asmin Paraatman Nadhu Paadmakalpe-Dvamittha Mutthaabitha Padmayonihi-Anantha bhooma mamaroha raasim-Nirunthi vaadaalaya vaasa Vishno".This particular sloka is known to cure chronic diseases including cancer which seems to be the miraculous experience of devotees as a tamil magazine stated.Late 'Periyavar' of shri Kanchi Kaamakoti mutt has highly exemplified the greatness of this sloka and has stated to chant this mantra for 16 or 48 or 72 or 108 times each day for 48 days continuously for getting rid of chronic diseases.
