Of Walls ...

As usual a few things came together for me yesterday. They all related to walls and this started me thinking about walls. Why do so many of us spend so much time building walls, closing doors, hiding behind all sorts of things? All these fences and protective measures tend to freeze out those who should be closest to us.

Emotional walls don

The mystery of the unexplicable disappearance of 8 fans

Before you all panic, let me explain that I am talking about the rotating type not the cheering type of fans. So the story goes as follows :

Summary : At work  a certain section of rooms in a certain building was vacated and emptied of all its furniture then closed off to have them painted and fix whatever needed to be fixed. The duration of the maintenance period was to be two weeks, where only the workers designated to do work there entered these rooms. There were 6 workers all in all who were to deal with the work, a carpenter, 2 painters, an electrician, a tile layer and handy-man (jack of all trades type). After one week, the electrician came and reported the disappearance of 2 electric ceiling fans out of different 4 rooms from the total of 12 to be renovated.

Suspects : In addition to the above mentioned 6 workers, there is a staff of 6 security guards per shift (3 shifts daily) guarding the 3 entrances to the premises, which adds up to 18 guards.

Evidence : there was none found in the rooms, other than the empty holes in the ceiling with bits of wires hanging out. No signs of wreckage or force, meaning that the fans were dismantled by someone who knew what he was doing.

Note : the premises (being a foreign company and declared as foreign soil) is surrounded by a thick high wall (4.5 m high), on top of which is barbed wire and crushed glass, making it impossible for anyone to climb over it, specially carrying 8 fans, even if it is one by one.

An investigation was started with yours truly (sympathy and pity is very welcome) taking notes of all 24 people being questioned by the chief of administration. To cut a long story short, I am sure you all know the three monkeys (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil). Well apparently Darwin was right and man really descends from apes, and those 24 people prove that, for all of them heard nothing, saw nothing and certainly said nothing, let alone did anything.

Just to give you an example of how it went :

Q: name?
A: so & so.

Q: profession?
A: security guard.

Q: your shift?
A: afternoon shift from 3 pm to 11 pm.

Q: where are you positioned?
A: front door of the premises leading to the administration building.

Q: in the period from 7.8.2004 until 21.6.2004 you were positioned at the same place at the same time?
A: yes.

Q: did you notice anybody going out in some unusual manner?
A: like how?

Q: carrying a big package or box or some heavy things?
A: no.

Q: you must have heard about the disappearance of the 8 fans
A: yes

Q: so they must have left the premises somehow
A: yes

Q: how do you think that happened?
A: I don

Change Alone Is Unchanging!

Change is upsetting. Repetition is tedious. Three cheers for variation!

In many amusement parks and sometimes where coffee, tea or canned drinks are dispensed by machines, one can find a "Change Machine." I can never walk past such a contraption without feeling a twinge. How tempting! A machine that brings forth change, all one has to do is push some button. Wouldn

Gifts That Come From The Heart

Gifts of one who loved me, --
'T was high time they came;
When he ceased to love me,
Time they stopped for shame.

from Essays: Second Series (1844)
by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Have you ever sat there and wrecked your brain to come up with what you thought would be the perfect gift for someone special? I am sure you have, then you will also surely forgive me for my post today. (Am I allowed to vent?)

So I was faced with a decision about what to give. It was a special occasion and nothing seemed good enough. I made long lists in my mind of possible items that I could give, only to cross them out almost immediately. This one was too insignificant, that one too common, this one too elaborate, that one too impersonal. I needed a special gift for I had Khalil Gibran

Questions

Who can tell what the future holds?
What would the future be?
Is it really free will or is it already written?
If it is, who wrote it?

Why are we here?
Could we alter the future?
Maybe ...

Would it matter at all?

The questions are endless.
Limitations of the mind make us short-sighted.
We could spend all eternity asking
But who would we ask?

Labor omnia vincit - Work conquers all things or does it?

Unless someone with influence acts soon, this post must serve as an obituary for the hopes I had earlier this year of reform in my place of work, sighs. Today I was again stuck most of the day in meetings, which I absolutely detest. They are nothing but counter-productive, boring, tiresome, useless, impractical, futile, means for mis-communication, discrimination, blame allocation and picking veiled fights, in short an utter waste of time. Now I know what whoever coined the phrase :

Neanderthals Need Not Apply!

Left! So I think I can see a trend emerging on the blogs, and ofcourse since I am such an unimaginative copycat I decided to ride the wave and join in. The trend I see is this advertising wave. First Aran put up her blog up for sale, then Rainmaker invited bidding for Gmail invites. So I was thinking about what I could advertise here.

After thinking long and hard and scratching my head several times (no, don
